Feline Fun Fact Friday - Big Cats vs Big Snakes

Jaguars sometimes eat snakes, not something everyone wants to hear on World Snake Day. But, do these large snakes ever eat big cats? One study on pumas led researchers to a 14-foot green anaconda that had a puma inside it’s stomach (Shaw, 2017). The snake died shortly after researchers found it due to injuries sustained from the puma in the process of trying to eat it Shaw, 2017(). Below is an image of a jaguar with its prey, a yellow anaconda, along the Cuiabá River in Brazil.

In 2019 there were reports of a python trying to eat a leopard, while the leopard was distracted trying to hunt an impala (Sun Reporter, 2019). The snake and cat wrestled for a short time, with the snake trying to bite the leopard while the leopard clawed at the python (Sun Reporter, 2019). A few moments later while the python began to squeeze the leopard, the leopard came out the victor with the final killer bite (Sun Reporter, 2019). The video below shows part of their fight, but does not show how the fight ended.
