International and World Jaguar Day

Some claim International Jaguar Day is November 29th, while others say World Jaguar Day is April 10th or June 11th (IJD, 2020; SPECIES WJD, 2020; WJD, 2020). We can all agree that jaguars deserve more than one day of celebration, so why not celebrate them all! Jaguars are being threatened by habitat loss, wildfire threats, poaching, direct killings and prey loss. Their population size is unknown, but it is not too late to help save and protect jaguars and their habitat.

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is focusing on protecting 5,000 jaguars and 400,000 square kilometers of habitat while securing 30 priority jaguar conservation landscapes by 2030 (WCS International Jaguar Day, 2020). WCS claims habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict over livestock are the two main threats jaguars currently face, followed by the national and international trade of jaguar parts (WCS International Jaguar Day, 2020).

You can support jaguars by symbolically adopting one through the World Wildlife Fund. Do not buy any jaguar parts or fur. Voice your opinion about protecting the jaguar habitat and stopping the wildfires that are currently burning. You can support initiative’s like the Jaguar Corridor Initiative through Panthera or the Big Cats Initiative through National Geographic.

Make sure you celebrate jaguars on April 10th, June 11th, and/or November 29th, or any and every day!
