World Lion Day

World Lion Day is celebrated on August 10th. Dereck and Beverly Joubert are National Geographic Explorers who take pictures and film documentaries about lions and other African wildlife (National Geographic Big Cats, 2020). In 2009 they co-created the Big Cats Initiative with National Geographic in an effort to halt the decline of big cat populations in the wild (National Geographic Big Cats, 2020). Since 2009 the Big Cats Initiative has provided over 150 grants for work in 28 countries, built 2,000 livestock enclosures to reduce human-wildlife conflict, reduced threats for almost 3,000 big cats in the wild and removed 13,000 snares from big cat habitats (National Geographic Big Cats, 2020). Visit their website Wildlife Films to learn more about Dereck and Beverly and watch the several documentaries they created about big cats and other African wildlife.

Instead of having a lion as a pet or participating in the illegal wildlife trade, you can symbolically adopt your very own lion through the World Wildlife Fund.

Support organizations that support lions and coexistence with humans.

Visit the Big Cats Initiative to learn more ways on how you can help lions and other big cats.

Make sure you celebrate World Lion Day every August 10th!
